Shannon's 10 Tips for NETWORKING!

I attended two networking meetings and a job fair this week. All three were highly productive. I think I made close to 40 new contacts. I got my resume sent direct to hiring managers at companies I was targeting for a full-time career position. I passed out a lot of business cards to try and grow my consulting businesses which netted me multiple consultations with potential new clients. I met so many nice new people willing to help me and had a lot of fun! Besides that networking can help you to overcome shyness, take you out of your comfort zone and who knows what can happen from the people you meet at these events. I am certainly no expert at this and it is something I continue to work on by attending more events. Yes, it is a very difficult thing to do for many people so here are a few of my tips to get the most out of it!

  1. Dress like a CEO! Looking sharp is the best way to make a great first impression. You only have 1 chance!

  2. Smile and have fun.

  3. Work the room and walk around. Say hello to anyone.

  4. Be prepared by knowing yourself (and your 30 second commercial) Practice it before going to an event.

  5. Look someone in the eye, shake their hand, tell them what you do and what you are looking for.

  6. Find common things or a bond in the conversation, something that can make you memorable so you standout and when you follow up they remember you. Doing this can also can make your conversation last longer and the conversation will feel more natural.

  7. Leave the conversation telling them what you can do for their business (if your a consultant) or simply thank them for their time!

  8. Remember nothing is a waste! Everyone you meet might not be able to directly help you but they might know someone who can in their network.

  9. Make sure you have plenty of business cards and they market your brand well (I can create them for you!)

  10. Follow up and connect on Linkedin or by email right away thanking them for their time and reminding them how you can help their business. Even if you cant help them and they were just nice, still connect to grow your network. You never know when someone can help you in the future!
